Alain Delon

Born on November 8, 1935, Alain Delon experienced a turbulent childhood marked by his parents' divorce and subsequent stays with foster parents and in various boarding schools, from which he was frequently expelled. He left school at 15 and, at 17, joined the French Marines, serving as a parachutist in Indo-China, including participation in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. After his discharge in 1956, Delon returned to Marseilles, working odd jobs and becoming familiar with the French criminal underground. His striking good looks led to his discovery at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival, and he made his film debut that same year in Yves Allegret's "Quand la Femme S'en Mele." Within three years, he achieved international recognition, rapidly ascending to stardom, initially portraying tender lovers and romantic heroes before evolving into roles that showcased a sleek, more dangerous persona. He became one of France's highest-paid actors, starring in acclaimed European films such as "The Leopard," "Is Paris Burning," and "Red Sun." Though his American debut in "Airport '79" did not achieve the same impact as his European work, he was a major foreign star in Japan. Delon expanded his career by forming the film company Adel Film in the late 1960s and Delbeau Productions in 1964, beginning to produce feature films in 1970 and directing in 1981. Over his four-decade acting career, he appeared in more than 80 motion pictures. His personal life included marriages to Nathalie Canovas and Rosalie van Breemen, and he fathered three children. In 1969, he was embroiled in the high-profile Markovic scandal, from which he was eventually cleared, emerging with a darker, more complex public image that influenced his subsequent focus on successful gangster films. A shrewd businessman, Delon developed a brand with his 'AD' logo, owned an airline, and cultivated passions for art collecting and breeding racehorses. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the César Award for Best Actor in 1985, an Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1997, and an Honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019. He became a member of France's Legion of Honour in 1991 and acquired Swiss citizenship in 1999. In his later years, Delon lived in Switzerland and France, caring for stray dogs. After suffering a stroke in 2019 and battling cancer, he was placed under judicial oversight in April 2024. Alain Delon died peacefully on August 18, 2024, at his home in Douchy, France, at the age of 88.
