Xavier Cugat was born in Barcelona, Spain, and moved to Havana, Cuba, with his family at the age of three due to political circumstances. His musical talent emerged early; by age four, he received a small violin, and by ten, he was playing with a symphony orchestra in Havana, becoming first violinist by age twelve. A pivotal moment occurred when tenor Enrico Caruso, impressed by Cugat's skill, arranged for him to tour America as his accompanist. During this period, Caruso also taught Cugat the art of drawing caricatures. After Caruso's death shortly after their arrival in New York in 1921, Cugat initially struggled, playing violin for room and board before joining a touring orchestra. Realizing his aspirations lay beyond classical violin, he worked as a caricaturist for the Los Angeles Times between 1924 and 1925, before transitioning into the movie business.Cugat's career gained significant momentum as a Latin bandleader, earning him the moniker "Rumba King" and leading to numerous movie appearances in the 1940s and 1950s. His band's sparkling rhythms introduced a generation to Latin dances, with popular songs including "The Isle of Capri" and "Tico Tico." Beyond music, Cugat was also an accomplished primitive artist, whose Mexican-themed works were displayed in his chain of eight restaurants. In the late 1950s, he admitted to a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee that he had received coaching for his appearance on the "$64,000 Challenge" quiz game, where he won $16,000, which he stated he donated to an orphanage in Cuba. Cugat's band remained a popular draw, particularly in Las Vegas. He was married four times, including to band singer Carmen Elen Castillo, Lorraine Allen, Abbe Lane, and Charo Baeza. After suffering a stroke in 1969, which left him partially paralyzed, he eventually moved back to Barcelona, Spain, where he died of heart failure on October 27, 1990, at the age of 90.
