He earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1940 and later specialized in pediatrics, becoming a pediatrician in 1948. His most notable achievement came in 1954 when he, along with Dr. John Enders and Dr. Frederick Robbins, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
The Nobel Prize recognized their discovery of the ability of the poliomyelitis virus to grow in cultures of different tissues. This pivotal breakthrough provided the necessary foundation for Dr. Jonas Salk to develop the first effective polio vaccine, thereby revolutionizing public health efforts against the disease.
