Born around August 1, 1942, Jerry Garcia became a pivotal figure in American rock music. After serving in the Army in 1959, he co-founded The Warlocks in July 1965, a group that soon evolved into The Grateful Dead in June 1966. As the band's lead guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Garcia performed with them for their entire thirty-year existence, and was widely viewed as the group's leader, a role he often disavowed. His father's death in 1947 and the passing of bandmate Ron "Pigpen" McKernan in 1973 were significant events in his life; Garcia was also arrested for drug possession in New Orleans in 1970.
Beyond his work with The Grateful Dead, Garcia was involved in numerous side projects, including the Saunders–Garcia Band, the Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, the Garcia/Grisman acoustic duo, Legion of Mary, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage, which he co-founded. He also released solo albums and contributed as a session musician to other artists' recordings. Later in life, Garcia experienced health issues, including diabetes that led to a coma in 1986, and struggled with substance addiction. He died of a heart attack on August 9, 1995, at the age of 53, while at a rehabilitation facility in Novato, California. A short, illustrated memoir of his childhood, "Harrington Street," was published posthumously.
