Born on November 26, 1847, as Princess Marie Sophie Frederikke Dagmar of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, she was the second daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse-Cassel. Her siblings included Alexandra, who became Queen Consort of the United Kingdom, King Frederick VIII of Denmark, and King George I of Greece, establishing a wide network of European royalty. On November 9, 1866, she married Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich of Russia, who later ascended to the throne as Emperor Alexander III, at which point she adopted the name Maria Feodorovna. Their union produced six children, including Nicholas II, who would become the final Emperor of Russia. She served as Empress Consort during her husband's reign from 1881 until his death in 1894.
Following the assassination of her son Nicholas II and his family in 1918, Maria Feodorovna left Russia during the Russian Revolution, eventually returning to her native Denmark. She outlived her eldest son by ten years and passed away on October 13, 1928, at the age of 80, at Hvidøre near Copenhagen, having also outlived three of her other children.
