Alex Haley was born in New York around August 11, 1921, and raised by his maternal grandmother in Henning, Tennessee, following his mother's early death and his father's pursuit of education. He served in the Coast Guard for 20 years, during which he began writing letters for shipmates, honing his craft. Despite receiving hundreds of rejection slips over eight years before selling his first article, he persisted in his ambition to write, often finding inspiration while sailing at sea. His early life was marked by financial struggles, at one point having only 18 cents and two cans of sardines.
Haley dedicated 12 years to researching and writing his seminal work, "Roots," which was published in 1976. This historical novel quickly became a global phenomenon, selling 8.5 million copies within two years, translated into 37 languages, and adapted into a highly successful ABC mini-series. "Roots" garnered 271 awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, and its success allowed Haley to embark on an international lecture circuit. In 1987, he ceased touring to focus on writing, releasing "A Different Kind Of Christmas" in 1988, a book he wrote during a freighter trip. Haley, who married three times and had a daughter, Cindy, died of a heart attack on February 10, 1992, in Seattle, Washington.
