Albrecht von Wallenstein

Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius, Herzog de Wallenstein, was born around September 14, 1583, into a titled Protestant Bohemian family. Displaying a rebellious nature in his youth, he was expelled from a Lutheran school before converting to Catholicism and receiving a Jesuit education. Wallenstein began his military career in the Hungarian army, where his strategic acumen quickly distinguished him as a brilliant field general. His marriage to a wealthy widow in 1609 significantly enhanced his financial standing and influence at the Vienna court. During this period, he was rewarded with the Duchy of Friedland, which he expanded through agricultural reforms, cultivating thousands of prosperous acres. With the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War, Wallenstein entered the service of Emperor Ferdinand II, achieving a series of decisive victories between 1625 and 1629. His successes earned him the titles of Duke of Mecklenburg and General of the Baltic and Oceanic Seas. However, his vaulting ambitions for an empire and political power, coupled with a notoriously furious temper, began to generate significant opposition and earned him the moniker "the madman." This overweening ambition led to his initial dismissal in 1630. He was later reinstated to defend the empire against Swedish incursions, successfully recovering Bohemia, but suffered a defeat by Gustavus Adolphus at Lutzen in 1632, leading to his final dismissal. Wallenstein's continued intrigues resulted in an imperial proclamation of treason. On the late evening of February 25, 1634, his own officers deserted him, and he was murdered by assassins in his bedroom in Eger, Bohemia.
