Pam Grier

Pam Grier rose to prominence in the early 1970s, becoming a notable figure in cinema through her starring roles in a series of blaxploitation and women-in-prison films. Her iconic performances in movies such as *The Big Bird Cage*, *Coffy*, *Foxy Brown*, and *Sheba, Baby* established her as a formidable presence on screen, leading director Quentin Tarantino to suggest she may have been cinema's first female action star. Her career experienced a significant resurgence with her leading role in Tarantino's 1997 crime film *Jackie Brown*, for which she earned a Satellite Award and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress, along with a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. Beyond her film work, Grier has also made notable contributions to television. For six seasons, she portrayed Kate "Kit" Porter in the Showtime series *The L Word*, which began in 2004. She also received an Emmy nomination for her voice work in the animated program *Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child*. Throughout her life, Grier has been associated with several high-profile relationships, including with basketball players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain, comedians Freddie Prinze and Richard Pryor, *Soul Train* host Don Cornelius, music executive Kevin Evans, and marketing executive Peter Hempel. In 1988, she was diagnosed with stage-four cervical cancer and given a limited prognosis, but she made a full recovery through rigorous treatment and has since been in remission.
