Otto Graham

Born on December 6, 1921, Otto Graham entered the world weighing a remarkable 14 pounds, 12 ounces. His parents, both music teachers, ensured their four sons learned various instruments, with Otto mastering the piano, violin, cornet, and French horn. By age 16, he was both the Illinois French horn and basketball scoring champion. His exceptional high school athletic record earned him a full basketball scholarship to the University of Illinois, where he continued to excel, earning eight varsity letters and being named Big Ten football and basketball MVP in the same academic year. After enrolling in the Navy's V-5 carrier program following Pearl Harbor, he married his college sweetheart, Beverly Collinge, in 1945; they raised three children and two foster daughters. Graham was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1944 but signed with the Cleveland Browns of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in 1946. He led the Browns to 10 championship games in his 10 seasons, winning seven, before retiring at age 33. In 1959, Graham transitioned from playing to coaching, becoming the Athletic Director and football coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy. He guided the Bears to an undefeated season in 1963 and was also appointed to the President's Council on Physical Fitness. From 1966 to 1968, he served as head coach and general manager for the Washington Redskins, later coaching the East team in the 1968 NFL Pro Bowl. Graham was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame on September 12, 1965. In 1977, he was diagnosed with rectal cancer and underwent a colostomy, subsequently becoming the honorary national chairman of the National Cancer Society after winning a golf tournament with Joe DiMaggio. His legacy as one of the sport's greatest was further cemented when ESPN named him one of the 100 top athletes of the millennium in 1999, and Sports Illustrated recognized him as one of the top six football players of all time. Otto Graham passed away in Sarasota, Florida, from a heart aneurysm on December 17, 2003.
