Michel Temer

Michel Temer served as the 37th president of Brazil from August 31, 2016, to January 1, 2019. His ascent to the presidency followed the impeachment and removal from office of Dilma Rousseff, having previously served as vice president since 2011 and acting president from May 12, 2016, during Rousseff's suspension. At 75 years old, he became the oldest individual to assume the office. In his initial address as president, Temer called for a government of "national salvation" and articulated plans to reform the pension system and labor laws, in addition to curbing public spending. Despite his policy initiatives, his administration faced low popular approval, with a 2017 poll indicating only 7% support and a significant majority favoring his resignation amidst widespread protests. Temer did not seek re-election in the 2018 elections and was succeeded by Jair Bolsonaro. Beyond his political career, Temer is also a published author, particularly in constitutional law. His most recognized work, "Elements of Constitutional Law," published in 1982, sold over 240,000 copies and focused on the structure of the Brazilian state and the separation of powers. His 2006 book, "Democracy and Citizenship," explored the significance of law and included some of his speeches as a federal deputy, where he expressed support for parliamentarism and a political recall system, while opposing economic interventionism and tax increases. In 2013, he published "Anonymous Intimacy," a collection of 120 poems.
