Born Margaretha Geertruida Zelle on August 7, 1876, Mata Hari was the daughter of a merchant. Her early life included an expulsion from convent school. At the age of 18, she married Rudolf John MacLeod, a man 22 years her senior, and moved to Java, Dutch East Indies, on July 11, 1895. The marriage was marked by violence and the death of one of their two children. After divorcing in 1906, she returned to Europe in 1905 and established herself in Paris as an exotic dancer, adopting the stage name Mata Hari. Her performances, which often featured nude belly dancing, brought her considerable fame.
During World War I, Mata Hari became involved in espionage, reportedly attending German espionage school. She was arrested by French authorities on February 13, 1917, accused of being a double agent after allegedly delivering information on German submarine activity to the French embassy. Her trial for treason commenced on August 25, 1917. She was convicted and executed by firing squad on October 15, 1917, in Vincennes, France, at the age of 41. Decades later, historian Leon Schirmann's research, published in 2001, suggested that French records may have been falsified, portraying her as a naive adventuress rather than a significant German spy, codenamed H21.
