Mark McGwire

Mark McGwire was born on October 1, 1963, in Claremont, California. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 1984 and made his Major League Baseball debut in 1986. In his first full season, McGwire hit 49 home runs, earning the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 1987, and later contributed to the Oakland A's winning the World Series in 1989. After being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in July 1997, McGwire continued his powerful hitting, finishing the 1997 season with 58 home runs. The 1998 season became historic as McGwire engaged in a widely publicized home run chase; on September 8, 1998, he hit his 62nd home run, surpassing Roger Maris's 37-year-old record. He ultimately concluded the season with an unprecedented 70 home runs, a record at the time, achieved on September 27, 1998. McGwire announced his retirement from playing Major League Baseball on November 11, 2001, due to ongoing injuries, with his final game played on October 7, 2001. He married Stephanie Slemer on April 20, 2002. Following his playing career, McGwire transitioned into coaching, serving as the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals starting in 2010, and contributed to their World Series victory in 2011. Throughout his career, McGwire was noted for his powerful hitting and his reserved demeanor, also establishing a charity to support abused children.
