Joe Lieberman

Born in Stamford, Connecticut, in 1942, Joe Lieberman was the eldest of three children to a liquor-store owner and a homemaker, who instilled in him a strong work ethic. He pursued higher education at Yale University, graduating in 1964, and subsequently earned his law degree from Yale Law School in 1967. Lieberman began his political career in Connecticut, serving in the state senate for a decade starting in 1970, followed by a term as state attorney general from 1983 to 1988. In 1988, he successfully ran for the U.S. Senate, where he would serve for over two decades. A devout and practicing Jew, he became the first Jewish person to be nominated on a major national ticket when Al Gore selected him as his running mate for Vice President in the 2000 U.S. presidential election. Throughout his career, Lieberman held a nuanced policy stance, supporting abortion rights while opposing late-term abortions, backing campaign finance limits, and advocating for anti-crime legislation and the death penalty. He also supported gay rights but voted against same-sex marriage, and favored gun control measures like waiting periods and bans on certain assault weapons. He authored five books, including "The Power Broker" (1966) and "In Praise of Public Life" (2000). The 2000 presidential election, in which Lieberman was the vice-presidential nominee, proved to be one of the most contentious in U.S. history, ultimately decided by the Supreme Court in favor of George W. Bush. In 2003, Lieberman launched a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 but withdrew early due to poor primary showings. Returning to the Senate, he notably supported the Iraq War and aligned with some Republican administration policies, which led to him losing the Democratic primary for his Senate seat in 2006. Undeterred, he successfully ran and won the general election as an independent, serving his final term officially as an independent Democrat while caucusing with and chairing committees for the Democratic Party. He retired from the Senate in 2013. Joe Lieberman passed away on March 27, 2024, at the age of 82, from injuries sustained in a fall.
