He was ordained a priest in 1954 and subsequently appointed bishop of Orléans in 1979. In 1981, he assumed the role of Archbishop of Paris, a position he held until 2005, thereby leading the Roman Catholic Church in France.Pope John Paul II named him to the College of Cardinals on February 2, 1983. Lustiger's influence extended beyond his ecclesiastical duties, as evidenced by his election to the Académie Française in 1995. Throughout his life, he maintained a profound connection to his Jewish heritage and actively worked towards promoting understanding and reconciliation between Jewish and Christian communities.
