Henry R. Luce

Henry R. Luce was born in Tengchow, China, on April 3, 1898, to missionary parents. After attending Yale University, he embarked on a career that would revolutionize American journalism. In 1923, Luce co-founded Time magazine with Briton Hadden, introducing a new style of weekly news summary that quickly gained prominence. He continued to expand his publishing empire, launching Fortune magazine in 1930, which focused on business and economics, and the photographic weekly Life magazine in 1936, which became a cultural phenomenon known for its photojournalism.Luce's vision extended beyond individual publications; he aimed to inform and influence public opinion on a global scale. His media empire played a significant role in shaping American discourse throughout the mid-20th century. In 1935, he married Clare Boothe, a notable figure in her own right as a politician, playwright, and later U.S. Ambassador. Their marriage lasted 32 years. Henry R. Luce passed away on February 28, 1967, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 68, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the field of publishing.
