Gottfried Leibniz

Born in Leipzig, Saxony, Holy Roman Empire, Leibniz pursued studies in law and philosophy, laying the groundwork for his diverse intellectual pursuits. He embarked on a career as a civil servant, diplomat, and librarian for the House of Brunswick-Lüneburg, which provided him with opportunities to travel and engage with leading scholars of his time. During this period, he independently developed differential and integral calculus, a monumental achievement that occurred concurrently with Isaac Newton's work, leading to a historical dispute over priority. Leibniz's notation for calculus, including the integral sign and the use of 'd' for differentials, remains standard in mathematics today. He also pioneered symbolic logic, establishing fundamental principles that would later influence modern formal logic. Beyond mathematics, Leibniz formulated a comprehensive philosophical system, notably his theory of monads, which proposed that the universe is composed of infinite, indivisible, mind-like substances. His contributions extended to metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and theology, profoundly shaping Enlightenment thought. He also made advancements in mechanics, optics, and geology, and invented mechanical calculators capable of performing all four basic arithmetic operations. Leibniz's wide-ranging intellect and prolific output left an indelible mark across numerous academic disciplines. He passed away in Hanover on November 14, 1716, at the age of 70.
