Akihito was born on December 23, 1933, the first son of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako. Following traditional custom, he was separated from his parents at age three for upbringing by nurses and tutors, though he later attended a school with foreign students, a departure from previous imperial practice. During the Allied occupation of Japan after World War II, he was sent to a provincial city. He prepared for his future role by studying political science and economics at Gakushuin University.
Demonstrating independence, Akihito chose Michiko Shoda, a commoner, as his bride, marking the first time a non-aristocrat joined the imperial family. Their marriage on April 10, 1959, was widely celebrated. The couple opted to raise their three children, Prince Hiro, Prince Aya, and Princess Nori, at home, further modernizing imperial family life. As Crown Prince, Akihito maintained a schedule of public appearances and official receptions. He developed an expertise in marine biology, particularly gobies, and was also a dedicated cellist. He ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne as the 125th Emperor of Japan on January 7, 1989, following his father's death, with his enthronement ceremony held on November 12, 1990. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in December 2002, Akihito eventually abdicated due to age and declining health on April 30, 2019, becoming Emperor Emeritus and succeeded by his elder son, Naruhito.
