Emil Zátopek, born around September 19, 1922, was a dominant figure in long-distance running. At the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, he achieved an unprecedented feat by winning gold medals in the 5000 metres, 10,000 metres, and, remarkably, the marathon, which he ran for the first time in his career. His distinctive running style and relentless pace earned him the nickname "Czech Locomotive." Zátopek was also a pioneer in breaking significant time barriers; he was the first athlete to complete the 10 km run in under 29 minutes in 1954, and three years prior, he had broken the hour mark for running 20 km. His brutally tough training methods contributed to his success, leading many, including the editors at Runner's World Magazines in 2013, to consider him the Greatest Runner of All Time.Despite his athletic heroism, Zátopek's life was marked by political turmoil. Initially an influential figure within the Communist Party in his native Czechoslovakia, he later supported its democratic wing. Following the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968, he faced severe repercussions, being stripped of his military rank, expelled from the army and the Party, and removed from all prominent positions. He was subsequently forced into a series of inferior and dangerous jobs, including working in a uranium mine, garbage collection, and well digging. On March 9, 1990, Zátopek was officially rehabilitated by Václav Havel, restoring his public standing. He passed away in Prague on November 22, 2000, at the age of 78, after a prolonged illness.
