Edgar Mitchell, born around September 17, 1930, was an American astronaut, aeronautical engineer, and Doctor of Science. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1959 and later as a project manager with the Navy's Field Office from 1964 to 1965, where he was in charge of the Manned Orbiting Lab. Mitchell achieved significant recognition as the sixth person to walk on the Moon on January 31, 1971, as part of the Apollo 14 mission. He resigned from the astronaut corps in 1972 after six years of service.Following his career as an astronaut, Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 1973, an organization dedicated to investigating the relationships between science and spirituality. He also worked as a management and technology consultant. Mitchell held beliefs regarding the existence of extraterrestrial life, advocating for congressional hearings into what he described as secret government knowledge concerning alien spacecraft.
