Daniel Ellsberg

Daniel Ellsberg, born on April 7, 1931, was an influential American figure whose actions significantly impacted public discourse on government transparency and accountability. While employed by the RAND Corporation, he became a central figure in 1971 when he disclosed the Pentagon Papers, a classified Pentagon study on the U.S. government's involvement and decision-making processes in the Vietnam War, to The New York Times and other newspapers. This act led to his indictment on January 3, 1973, under the Espionage Act of 1917, along with charges of theft and conspiracy, carrying a potential sentence of 115 years. However, due to documented governmental misconduct and illegal evidence-gathering, all charges against Ellsberg were dismissed on May 11, 1973, by Judge William Matthew Byrne Jr. Beyond his role in the Pentagon Papers incident, Ellsberg made other notable contributions. He formulated the Ellsberg paradox, an important example in decision theory, and conducted extensive studies on nuclear weapons and nuclear policy. He was also a vocal supporter of whistleblowers such as WikiLeaks, Chelsea Manning, and Edward Snowden. His commitment to human rights and courage was recognized with the Right Livelihood Award in 2006 and the Olof Palme Prize in 2018. Ellsberg was married twice and had three children, including author and journalist Michael Ellsberg. He passed away on June 16, 2023, at the age of 92, at his home in Kensington, California, following a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
