Siddhartha Gautama, known as Buddha, was born around 623 BCE in Lumbini, in what is now Nepal. Raised in a princely family, he was initially shielded from the realities of suffering, old age, and death. Upon encountering these aspects of human existence, he renounced his luxurious life to seek a deeper understanding of the nature of suffering and the path to liberation. His quest involved rigorous ascetic practices and deep meditation, aiming to transcend worldly attachments and achieve spiritual awakening.After years of intense asceticism and meditation, he attained enlightenment under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, realizing what he termed the Middle Way. His subsequent teachings, known as the Dharma, centered on the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, offering a framework for understanding suffering and achieving nirvana. He spent the remainder of his life traveling and teaching, establishing the Sangha, a community of monks and nuns, and laying the groundwork for a spiritual tradition that would spread across Asia and beyond.
